With its blistering attack on American foreign policy, it’s no surprise that Confessions has resonated among an international audience. Still, the book’s overwhelming success abroad has taken on momentum beyond any expectations to become a movement all its own.

At the end of January, John spoke at the Fifth Annual World Social Forum (WSF) held in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The weeklong gathering carried the theme “Another World Is Possible” and brought together 155,000 activists from 135 countries. An article by Marjorie Cohn in truthout called John “one of the most compelling speakers at the WSF,” citing his insights as an explanation for the war in Iraq.

On February 22, Spanish newspaper El Pais ran an editorial written by Jorge Volpi, an award-winning Mexican writer. Volpi offered an interesting perspective on the importance of Confessions, suggesting that it is in fact the responsibility of developing countries to protect themselves against this new form of economic imperialism: “At the end, Perkins’ moral is clear: as long as the developing countries are not willing to defend their natural resources and to fight against external corruption and foreign manipulation, the proliferation of EHM and the expansion of the American empire are set to continue.”

Sparked by the international publicity, readers from all over the world have written to John about Confessions, sharing their gratitude for this important book. A reader from Ecuador—one of the countries where John worked as an EHM—wrote, “I hope you know that you are adding crucial information to the struggle for a better world with your courageous book . . . your book is truly a heroic endeavor.” Another Malaysian reader wrote, “your book really touched me in a powerful way and the message within it is something that people all over the world should know about, not just Americans.”

The month of March brings John to the forefront of German media with interviews featured on Bavarian radio station BR, Internet magazine Telepolis, and the award-winning arts show Kulterzeit. Der Spiegel, Germany’s most widely read magazine on political and economic issues that reaches over one million readers weekly, will feature a two-page spread on Confessions in its March 28th issue. Welt Journal, the Austrian equivalent of 60 Minutes, will air a portrait of John during the first week of April. The book will also appear in the highly renowned weekly Swiss paper Sonntagszeitung.

And this is just the beginning. Already, translation rights have been sold in German, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Turkish, Italian, Dutch, and Russian—and more are on the way. The international success of Confessions demonstrates how important it is that we all must understand what is happening in our world if we are ever to make any changes.
